Eric Alterman of The Nation wonders where the liberal commentators have gone at Time Magazine. In his online posting today, Alterman points out that Time is leaning pretty far to the right these days, with the likes of Joe Klein, Andrew Sullivan and Charles Krauthammer. Plus, let’s not forget my new favorite (not) Catilin Flanagan. Well, Time, if you’re really in the market, PunditMom is ready to help! Or if not me, there is no dearth of thoughtful, liberal voices out there. Just take a look at the Huffington Post, and you’ll see plenty of people posting columns and blogging about things a bit more to the center. Sure, some are a little extreme, but there’s plenty of opinion writing talent out there just waiting to be discovered (Oh! — Pick me! Pick me!)
But I do have to wonder, why there are so few voices like mine in the world of opinion writing? By that, I mean a female voice who isn’t a shrill harpy like Ann Coulter and who isn’t a Republican in Democrat’s clothing like Flanagan. It seems as if many columnists opine just to be inflammatory rather than starting a thoughtful discussion or helping us to think about things in a different way. And maybe that’s what Time wants. After all, people sell a lot of books, newspapers and magazines by making outrageous accusations. So it’s possible that Time is just after increasing the bottom line, rather than adding to the national dialogue.
So executives at Time Magazine, if you’re intersted in having a grounded, “liberal” voice, give me a call. I’m at my keyboard waiting with plenty of ideas to rival your ultra-conservative stable. That should give your readers something to talk about.
