Arianna Huffington poses some good questions today about Senator Hillary Clinton and her nascent presidential bid. It seems the junior senator from New York has landed herself on the cover of Time this week, with the mag exploring her purported presidential ambitions. But does she have the “right stuff?”
As a staunch Democrat, I would vote for Hillary if she was running for president, but as I’ve said before, I don’t believe she can win, and the informal Time poll you can take online seems to support my gut instinct (at least the way the voting stands now) — 35% love her and 40% hate her, 43% think she should run and 56% say she shouldn’t, 40% say they’d vote for her and 60% say they would not.
According to this week’s Legal Times, she’s building quite a war chest, at least from the nation’s attorneys — she’s got close to $2.5 million in her coffers just from lawyers contributions alone. So all signs seem to be pointing to a run for the former First Lady, but I’m hoping she holds off. How can we convince her to put her own political desires on hold for the good of the Democratic Party, i.e., selecting a candidate that could actually win the electoral votes to take back at least the White House? I don’t know the answer, but I’m hoping that someone like the former President Clinton knows the asnwer.
I’m keeping my fingers crossed that her hubby can convince her to stay in the Senate and maybe back a ticket I like — Gore/Feingold in 2008! The T-shirts are ready!
