Things I haven’t done yet for "vacation"

Well, it’s T minus 5 and counting for our trip to Venice.

I know I should be looking forward to it, and I’m sure I will be in a day or two, but I am not looking forward to the thing that always happens … I will still have main responsibility for entertaining Rachel and trying to keep her from from melting down because : (1) she’s not sleeping in her own bed, (2) she’s sleep deprived because of the time change, (3) she doesn’t want to walk around anymore or see any more “sights”, (4) there’s no SpongeBob or any other cartoon she knows on European TV … need I go on?

From the time we get on the airplane to leave D.C. until we get home in week’s time, I know from past experience that I will get little relief from those duties, same as when we’re home. And that makes me sad and tired before I even get my first glimpse of the Grand Canal.

Sure, others will entertain her at times throughout the trip, but utlimately, it’s mommy who gets the most work.

What I want is a REAL vacation — not a trip, not a change of scenery with the same duties — a real vacation, where I get to lie on a beach and snap my fingers for the cabana boy to bring by another one of those frothy drinks with the umbrella in it. Or, maybe just send my husband and daughter off somewhere and have a quiet house all to myself.

Ahhhh, the travel fantasies I have when I’m procrastinating about doing what needs to be done before that airplane leaves, like: (1) filing, (2) writing, (3) cleaning out the fridge, (4) going to my meeting, (5) paying the bills, (6) figuring out what’s for dinner tonight — you get the idea! :)
