Are You "Brazen" Enough?

I’ve learned from a variety of personal experiences that when it comes to careers and jobs, the times they are a’ changin’.

There’s one person I know (I haven’t met her in person yet, but I hope to soon!) who truly has her finger on the pulse of the intersection of Generations X & Y and the marketplace — Penelope Trunk, The Brazen Careerist.

I love reading her blog (appropriately enough!) called Brazen Careerist. Even though I hate to admit that I’m more Baby Boomer than Gen. X-er, her insights and advice are invaluable for anyone at any stage of career development.

So I was pretty excited when an opportunity arose to review her new book before it even hits the book stores!

Brazen Careerist: The New Rules for Success is an amazing little volume that should be on everyone’s bookshelf, from recent college grads to those who are old hands at the job hunt. If I had had even just a few of the pointers contained in her book when I was floundering about in my lawyering days, I might have found the focus and courage a lot sooner to leave the security of the high-paying job for the writing career I had always dreamed of.

The amazing thing about Penelope is that she also lives what she preaches. She’s not just an author who happens to have stumbled on to a topic that resonates with so many. She found her own way to step off the more traditional career path, tap into her passions and creativity and carve out a successful niche for herself. And she’s nice enough to share that with the rest of us.

Trunk covers everything from networking, to whether to be a “Boomeranger,” to finding ways to mine our creativity to keep from finding ourselves on the lockstep path to money but no happiness.

She dispenses great advice like, “Being likeable matters more than being competent.” No one is comfortable hearing things like that, but I know from first-hand experience that truer words were never spoken.

I know that both of my nieces, who are freshmen in college, are going to be getting copies of this book from me sooner rather than later. If you’re even thinking there’s room for change in your work or career, I say get your hands on this book ASAP!

Wow; I’m always hesitant to spend money on “career books”, but when the author is honest enough to admit that popularity earns more than competence…just, wow. That’s the kind of honesty that we (and our children) deserve.

I just got a copy as well – can’t wait to dig into it. If only my attention span were longer than the length it takes to read a blog post these days.

It’s an awesome book, I just posted a review on my blog. For Mom101, luckily Penelope understand the attention span of the blogger and blog reader and most of her book is broken up into 2 – 3 page sections.
