Moms & Politics

Jeffrey Toobin is talking about The Nine.

I want to talk about The Fifteen.

To override President Bush’s veto of the SCHIP – State Children’s Health Insurance Program — bill, only 15 Republicans need to move their support over to the Democrats.

According to an article in Politico yesterday, here are a few names of the 15 GOP Congressman who say they’re sticking with the president, even though it is acknowledged that they are vulnerable to being unseated in the next election:

Rep. Tom Feeney (Florida)
Rep. Steve Chabot (Ohio)
Rep. Sam Graves (Missouri)
Rep. John R. Kuhl (New York)
Rep. John Boozman (Arkansas)
Rep. Thaddeus G. McCotter (Michigan)
Rep. Jim Saxton (New Jersey)
Rep. Joe Knollenberg (Michigan)
Rep. Thelma Drake (Virginia)
Rep. Tim Walberg (Michigan).

The Democrats are going to put as much pressure on them in the next two weeks to try to make it to the magic override number. But you know what?

There are also the Democrats who need to be brought back into the fold, including one who says he wants to be president:

Rep. David Boren (Oklahoma)
Rep. Betty Castor (Florida)
Rep. Bobby Etheridge (North Carolina)
Rep. Jim Marshall (Georgia)
Rep. Gene Taylor (Mississippi)
Rep. Baron Hill (Indiana)
Rep. Mike McIntyre (North Carolina)

AND, Rep. Dennis Kucinich (Ohio).

If any of these Congressmen and Congresswomen are your representatives, give them a call. Have your friends call and E-mail, too.

With the ridiculous amount of money being spent on the war in Iraq, saying that you don’t want to spend a comparatively much smaller amount on the children of this country because you’re a “fiscal conservative” just doesn’t wash.

I am so glad you put this list up – I was hoping it would magically appear. Thanks.

      How true!

Humm, I guess if it were your husband that money was being spent on (little things like Kevlar) you would not think it is ridiculous….

      Kucinich???? Argh!

Sabrinat – If we weren’t there, it wouldn’t have to be spent. I don’t think that was the point…. The Republicans haven’t exactly been tightening the fiscal belt for the last 8 years.

none of these 15 are mine, but what a great post!

      Et tu Kucinich?

I did write my representatives, but I haven’t been following this too closely and hadn’t heard about the Bush/Emergency room quote. My husband was telling me about it the other day, but said that it was so absurd (he heard it on morning radio) that he was SURE someone was spoofing him. I’m disappointed (but not surprised) to read that it wasn’t a spoof.

sabrinat, the trouble is that that money ISN’T being spent enough on your husband. It’s going to Blackwater and KBR. The troops need more direct funding and the VA has been gutted. Disgraceful. They’ve got money for their pet corporations but none for the soldiers and none for our kids.

    10. Melissa Says:

A correction: It is Kathy Castor. Betty was her mom.

Both she and Dennis Kucinich voted “no” because the bill did not offer coverage to legal immigrants. Both will vote yes on 10/18 when the override is scheduled.

Boren has circulated a letter saying he’ll vote yes as well.
