Christ. Now I’m a little bit depressed.

I think you’re doing the right thing by not letting them watch the “analysis.” And as for a productive solution: if videos like this convince people to stop tuning in to news outlets that condone this sort of behavior, then I think that’s a sort of solution. Most of my friends complain endlessly about our (TV) media, but then sit there with their eyes glued to it anyway. They (the news outlets) don’t care about the intellectually responsible dissemination of information; they only care about whether or not you continue to watch their channel, about whether or not they are compelling. Best way to counter that is to make it clear that we don’t find that sort of trash compelling.

Nice blog, by the way. I have no idea if you’re alerted to .5y/o comments, but I think I’ll be sticking around and reading what you have to say. : )

It is sad that sexism and racism are still so prevalent in American society, but more sad that so many people in the mainstream media are unwilling to address it significantly. Hillary has certainly been a victim of sexism just as Obama’s been a victim of racism, IMO. And that sucks, but that doesn’t mean I like Hillary.

TV news is really quite awful these days. I think sexism is just one area of many that creates the mess that is TV news.

That said,I fear that blog posts like this will simply create further divisions in the sexism battle.

Its true, these are some of the worst comments of the bunch, but there is also some merit to the fact that it is one of the Clintons here. I don't care to debate whether or not its deserved, but the fact remains that there are strong feelings about the Clintons.

I just feel like making an example of the worst news outlet making selected awful comments about a very politically and emotionally charged public figure is not the best way to help solve the problem.

You have to give the opposition something, anything, otherwise they are not going to listen to a word you have to say. Especially when you attach a video as charged as this.

Yes its awful, yes it needs to be fixed, but this is not the way to create productive dialogs to solve the problem. This just makes believers of sexism in the news more angry at the news and opponents of change in the news more convinced that you are basing all of your arguments on 10 minutes of news clips out of months of ongoing news coverage.

Its not going to help foster productive dialog.

good post. I have been so upset at the acceptance of gender biased language. One woman reporter, Linda Douglas, from the Nati’l Journel, who often spoke about Hillary “sounding like a scolding mother” recently took a leave of absence to join the Obama campaign. What a surprise.
I hope that one good think that can come out of this campaign is a greater awarness of sexist language. Maria Coco has done some great writing on this.

It is sickening to think that men AND women will openly express such sexist opinions against the possibility of a female holding such a high political office. If their mothers (sisters, daughters, grandmothers, aunts, and wives) could see and hear them now. I thought it telling that one of the men made a comment to the fact that the “look” that Hillary gives when Obama speaks is like the “look” that every guy’s FIRST wife has given them. There may be a reason that you can’t stay committed to that FIRST wife…could it be because you are an A,_,S!

Thank you, thank you, thank you for the post and the video. I will share it with everyone I know.

I was just thinking of Senator Clinton this weekend while watching the Indy 500 on television. Danika Patrick was forced out of the race, and she was (for lack of a better word) pissed. She yelled at her pit crew and was ready to tangle with the driver who hit her car. As she fumed, the sports reporters were so proud of her for standing her ground and for showing what it takes to be a winner in professional auto racing. They commented how her fire and determination is what is needed to compete at this level.

I turned to my husband and asked why Senator Clinton can't get the same level of respect and support for her fire or determination in politics. I don't care if you support her politics or not, but don't bad-mouth her drive and vision.

As far as I am concerned, whether I am talking about Hillary or Danika, I am thankful for any woman who is brave enough to be "the first" in their field.

OMG my hair is standing up on the back of my neck…and I’m in chemo therapy for Ovarian Cancer..and mostly bald…so its really not easy to say that. However, the video is awful..I’ve experienced most of those things, as I am 61 and began selling commercial real estate in 1979 when women wouldn’t dare think about such a job. No matter where I went they always asked me to take notes or bring coffee..to this day when I go out with my male sales associates they always assume I must be a salesmen and not the VP of my division. I don’t think I’ll live to see it change. And for the life of me bless Hilary that she will take the abuse that comes with the territory.

I gave up watching news "analysis" after the first debate I watched. It is horrendous.

Even though I am not a Hillary supporter I abhor the way she has been referred to in the media.

As Anniegirl said, news is not news anhymore. It is all about entertainment and not underestimating the stupidity of the American people.
