Oh No, He Di’int!

Grover Norquist.

There’s a right-wing name that sends shivers up my liberal spine. While I’ve come to take whatever he says with a big ol’ salt lick, even he outdid himself today.

According to Political Punch:

Conservative activist Grover Norquist dropped by The Los Angeles Times’ Washington bureau and decided a classy and appropriate way to convey his opposition to the liberal positions of Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, was to call the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee “John Kerry with a tan.”

Clearly we haven’t gotten past the whole race issue in this campaign. Dare I say we will see words to this effect again and again? You know the right-wingers have been working on as many ways as possible to mention the fact that Barack Obama is black — OH MY! I hadn’t noticed!! — on the bet that somehow that will make a difference.

John McCain says he’s going to run a civil and courteous campaign? I guess that doesn’t stop him from using Norquist and others as the slime machine.

It’s easy to run a clean and courteous champain when you have “friends” to do the dirty work for you. Things like this are going to come back and bite McCain in the butt if he doesn’t stand up now and denounce them. Of course here’s hoping they bite him in the butt!

It’s a sad thing, sure… but not very surprising, is it?

It’s not as if American politicians in either party don’t go back and forth between using race as either a scalpel or a bludgeon. I mean, we saw that in this election on the Democrats side too, right?

I hope this kind of thing backfires this year. I think people are sick of it.

Public statements like this are so sad. I really hope the racist attitudes on the far right backfire on the party.
