Poverty is one of the issues that got me more excited than usual in this campaign year. But it’s a hard topic to get your head around. Many of us don’t know people who live in poverty.
Or so we think.
Instead of reinventing the wheel, please read this MSNBC article on the truth about poverty in America today. It’s getting worse, not better.
When soup and bread start becoming luxuries, things are worse than anyone could imagine. And it’s not going to get better any time soon.
So if I’m not going to write a lot and rely on the MSM today (in honor of my 25 x 2 b-day!), I can do this — for every comment on this Blog Action Day post by midnight Wednesday, I’ll donate $1 to the Capital Area Food Bank.
Ready, set, comment!

Thanks to everyone who commented! I will be donating $110 to the Capital Area Food Bank in honor of all your participation!

What a great thing to do on your birthday. You rock, PunditMom!

Thank you for highlighting this, PunditMom. I grew up friends with a child who never had enough to eat, clean clothes to wear, or the stuff that we took for granted. Teachers took care of her throughout middle and high school. Without kindness, who knows what would have happened.
I know it’s everywhere … but it sure makes an impact when it happens to someone you know.
Happy Birthday, PunditMom!

Happy Birthday and you rock! Very inspiring, PunditMom.
(I hope I made the cutoff over there. It’s not midnight here yet.)

Thank you Beth for pointing me to PunditMom. You (PunditMom) are creating awareness of a serious problem which I rarely give thought to. I just eat and assume I always will. Not. How can I celebrate my next birthday as selflessly as you’re celebrating yours? This is a real question folks. And, just for the record, this is the first response I’ve ever posted on the Web. This from a person who has been an instructional technologist for over 20 years! Happy Birthday to you. Camille

What a charitable way to commemorate your birthday, and a wonderful idea for us all to mimic in the future.
Have a happy birthday!

OK, I admit I hedged my bets and waited to see the total before making a commitment, but I’ll be matching your donation next month and challenging others to do the same. It’s a birthday present that can keep on giving, I hope.

OMG, Rebecca, Thanks for that commitment! Anyone else?
