Apparently the cable news outlets have decided that Minnesota Congresswoman Michelle Bachmann is their new darling — she’s everywhere channeling the spirit of Joe McCarthy with her questions and insinuations about the American-ness, if you will, of those who disagree with her extreme views.
And, I must say, in light of events this week, it looks like Sarah Palin is taking a page from that McCarthy-esque playbook. And it’s all starting to freak me out. Because as Chris Rock said in one of his comedy routines, once people start down the road of accepted racism towards one group, the hate train “is never late” when it comes to other groups who aren’t like the “real” Americans.
For an excellent take on why we should be worried about people like Bachmann and her attempts at wanting us to worry about the patriotism and Americanism of Barack Obama and anyone else who doesn’t share her extreme beliefs, check out this post by Jill at Writes Like She Talks, called Will the Real anti-Americans Please Stand Up?
That was enough to push me over the edge and make a small contribution to her opponent’s campaign, even though I don’t live anywhere near Minnesota. Because Bachmann is way too scary.
Bachmann has put that McCarthy train back on the tracks, but maybe if enough of us contribute a few dollars to her Democratic opponent, we can derail the hate politics that seem to be rising up the closer we get to November 4.
H/T to Soapbox Mom via Twitter for the video.
UPDATE: One more thing — check out this website calling for a congressional Censure of Bachmann.

Until last night, I had never heard of Michele Bachman. As I watched her interview, my mouth was hanging open. I could not believe the things she was saying!
What a nightmare!

Also, I hope everyone who reads your post takes the time to listen to the clip of Katrina Vanden Heuvel. I agree with every word Katrina said. She said exactly what I was thinking after I watched Bachman.

I thought my husband’s head was going to explode when he listened to Bachmann. And he isn’t even an American citizen, but it is his problem as much as it is ours.
This liberal leftist anti-American line the right is taking is going no where good.

When Pat Buchanan is the voice of reason, I worry.
Is the Bachmann clip somewhere? I’ve never heard of her…

I was so angry, I donated twice to her opponent El Tinklenberg’s campaign.

I was stunned by what I saw when I clicked to Jill’s site. I, a person who has never even stepped foot into the state of Minnesota, made a contribution to her opponent, Tinklenberg.

BlueLady, If more of us make contributions to candidates who support out goals, even if they are not in the states where we live, imagine how we could change this country. Thank you.
