(I was at the bookstore the other day and asked about a particular novelist — the salesman repeatedly steered me to "Romance," presumably because both the author and I were women. I clarified — three times! — that it was NOT Romance, just Fiction, but he persisted, as if unable to fathom why a woman and mother (I was holding my toddler's hands) would be reading anything else. So. Very. Angry.)
