Emerging Political Girls

You may have noticed that I’m not writing her quite as much as I usually do. I’m trying to keep my nose to the grindstone on my Mothers of Intention book project and make some headway before the holidays (to the friends who have been making sure I stay focused, I say thank you!)

While I was doing some research on organizations that focus on getting more women to run for public office, I came across this video at the site for Emerge America.  After writing earlier this week about the importance of focusing on women and girls globally, I was reminded that we need remember what a great resource we have in girls here at home, as well:

Maybe not all these high school students will run for elective office, but being exposed to the idea of it might make them more likely to find other ways to incorporate politics and activism into their lives as adults!

Our state assembly rep came to visit my class earlier this week. She not only taught them about her job, she involved them in revising the rough draft of a texting-while-driving law. I could see some of my students, boys and girls, getting interested in the process. Maybe I’ll vote for them some day!
