Everyone has been tweeting about the devastation in Haiti following the earthquake earlier this week. Actually, the devastation isn’t done since aftershocks are still occurring. Lots of people are trying to help, but the roads are in horrible shape and there’s no gas to put in the trucks to get the supplies from the airport to the victims.
Relief organizations need our help in raising money, but economic times are hard all over the world. But what if every blogger and every Twitter user donated just $1 to the relief organization of their choice? There are six million Twitter users and tens of millions of bloggers. Even PunditGirl is getting out her piggy bank and donating.
And did I mention that it’s the official, annual Delurking Day?

How about “delurking” here and tell me where you’re going to donate your dollar (or even a couple more, if you like) to help the thousands upon thousands of people who are going to need medical assistance, food, clean drinking water and much, much more?
Not enough incentive for you? Well, my friend Kristen at Motherhood Uncensored is collaborating with me today, and she’s going commando for Haiti relief! She’s dropping her drawers to make a difference. I bet you want to, as well!
When you’re done, head on over to Tweet your donation and this post and join this cause by using the hashtag #moms4haiti.
I’m counting — I hope we get into the millions!
Postcript: As my friend Devra at Parentopia has reminded me, thousands upon thousands of Hurrican Katrina victims are also still in need of assistance. So any donations for those Americans who need our help would also be incredibly helpful!

We’ve already started getting moms (and college kids have joined in, too) to give through Samaritan’s Purse! As of this post, $274.22 raised! See my blog for details.

I gave through the Red Cross. Thanks for giving me something positive to do after hearing how awful it is in Haiti. The NPR report on children sleeping amid dead bodies was the one that pushed me over the edge.

That’s lovely! For Delurker Day, I’m donating a dollar for every non-anonymous comment on my Delurk post.

I donated to the Red Cross International fund last night and wrote about my feeling of needing to do more on DC Metro Moms today.
And as Devra points out, our neighbors in LA/MS still weigh heavily on my mind.

We made our donation to samaritan’s purse too.

Hello! Delurking and saying that I gave my money to Doctors without Borders and will be blogging it later.
January 14th, 2010 at 6:35 pm
My family will be making a donation to the Red Cross. On top of that, I will also be donating $1 per comment received on my Delurking Day post to the same charity – so come on over and comment!

I’m not a mom so I won’t use the hashtag (no hard feelings, but I’m for Haiti too. I know you all get it.
) I will likely send my money to Doctors Without Borders and a little bit more to Yele (Wyclef’s organization.) when I can. I’ve been sifting through all of the options and can’t stay away from the news – so much need, it’s overwhelming. If I could leave my job and go down there to help in person, I would. Unimaginable.
My other contribution is going to be to really examine what I’m doing with myself – my time and my words. Stuff like this really brings privilege home to me – I’m reading bickering on Twitter now and just shaking my head. The things we have the privilege of arguing over, you know?
Thanks for helping to keep the focus where it ought to be.

Laurie, I hope you didn’t take offense to the “moms” thing — you are a wonderful friend and writer and I did not mean to be exclusive, just trying to be catchy!
You’re not the only one I’ve read today who is thinking about the idea of time, words, our relative privilege here in America. It’s something I want to focus on more in this new year, as well.

Okay, contrary to what I said earlier, I am counting ALL comments, and I’ll be sending my donation to SOS Children’s Village’s Haiti Emergency Appeal. Donations made at their Canadian site will be matched by the Canadian Federal Government.
