Changing the World

Now clip

Yeah, the doing it now is a bit of a problem these days!  I’m going to  be a little less present here in the next few weeks as I put my nose to the grindstone to try to finish my Mothers of Intention book!

But here’s a question — what needs to be done now in your political world?

Equitable funding for education – and soon. I’m talking state, federal, and local funding formulas. I dream of being able to open and close all the windows in my classroom, but even more, I dream of really being able to reach each child in my class, every year. Unfortunately, true quality education is not cheap. Priceless, perhaps, but not cheap.

I would agree on education, I would also say we are missing a huge opportunity when bailing out car companies (& their financing arms) by not requiring improvements in gas mileage/reductions in carbon emissions at the same time. We have an opportuntiy to reduce emissions here and become the leader in the auto industry once again if we stop doing business as usual.

I’ll go with Education too. NCLB is due to be renewed I need to get back into it and see what some of the proposals are. The other thing I would really like to see is improved public transportation. I would love it if we had a functional nation-wide rail system, but I also see it as a critical part of a healthy lifestyle and to meet the needs of our aging population who will need to give up their cars, but not their independence.

Oh, and a more sensible food policy ala Michael Pollan.

In the very short term, I would like to see someone light a fire under Martha Coakley, who is playing it too safe in her race for Kennedy’s seat and could very well be blindsided. It would not only be a loss for the state, but for the whole Democratic Party.
