I just wrote a blog bit about this issue on www.adhocmom.com. called "Lady on Lady" Crime: http://www.adhocmom.com/index.php/archive/5-articles/32-lady-on-lady-crime.
With everything that the United States has to offer it saddens me to see that we are so far behind in how we treat and value women in the workplace. Other countries place a huge importance on family life and making sure that women, in particular, have the ability to have a career without their personal life taking such a huge hit. I believe that if all women, regardless of political affiliation, banded together we could change this here in America. We must stand up and DEMAND the respect and rights reserved for raising the future generation. I'm really looking forward to the week of February 6th and to hearin you speak at the Mom 2.0 Summit.

I truly don't know how we'd manage if it weren't for the fact that I work full-time from home (with the help of a part-time nanny for childcare) and the fact that my husband is part of his family business. Without that kind of flexibility we would've ran into SO many issues because let's face it - life happens. Now that we're in the process of adopting 2 siblings through foster care we need that flexibility even more (for instance when we get final placement we'll immediately take at least a week off of work)... and that would be almost impossible in the corporate world.

One of the problems with so-called family friendly policies is that many employers implement them in ways that are friendly to one family at the expense of their co-workers families. Often when professional people take leave, their employers distribute their work among co-workers rather than bringing in a replacement. This causes those co-workers (most of whom have children) to work longer hours, and to add insult to injury, they don't get any additional pay since they are salaried employees. I'm just curious if anyone is looking into ways to force more equitable implementation of these policies.
