Is Rick Santorum Getting a Pass Because He’s a Dad?

Moms on both sides of the political aisle are well-acquainted with the heat high profile women candidates, who happen to be mothers, take when someone raises the “Who’s taking care of the kids question.”  It’s something I devoted a whole chapter to in my book, Mothers of Intention.

Even before she was a candidate, Hillary Clinton was painted as the bad mom who didn’t like to bake cookies.  Sarah Palin faced criticism when she ran for vice president because she still had small kids at home, including a newborn with special needs.  More recently, Congresswoman and DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz was portrayed in a New York Times article as a harried mom in a pink sweatsuit before the piece got around to mentioning her power position in the Democratic Party.

If there’s a mom involved, the political world likes to take a swipe.

So where is the criticism about Rick Santorum? The dad of a special needs daughter who’s only three-and-a half.  Is he getting a pass on parenting responsibilities  or should he be taking some heat like political moms usually do?

I’ve got something to say about that this week at my column at Babble Voices.

Did you even try to reach out to his campaign and/or former staffers to get behind-the-scenes information before writing this hit piece? What about Obama? Has he attended every school function or event for Sasha and Malia?

I’d try to come up with a liberal politician with a special needs child, but they just abort them.

I think you’re missing the point, Adrienne. My question is if the media found it somehow relevant to question moms, especially Sarah Palin as the mother of a special needs child, where is the questioning about Santorum? Every family has to make the right choices for them. But so often when it comes to women who are running for office, there is always the underlying question of why aren’t they home with their kids? Palin took heat from the left AND the right in 2008 especially because her son had Down Syndrome. Where is the media questioning about Santorum on that same topic?

It was really uncalled for for you to suggest that liberals abort their children. Really.

Adrienne – you are ignorant. I am a liberal with a special needs child that I chose to have, you obviously have no idea what you are talking about.
